Heavenly Citizenship

If you have done any traveling outside the country you know there is something very important you must keep with you and that’s your passport. A passport is an official document issued by a government, certifying the holder’s identity and citizenship and entitling them to travel under its protection to and from foreign countries. Now in order to secure a passport you need to submit a copy of your birth certificate. God’s word tells us that we are not born citizens of God’s kingdom but we can become one through faith in Christ Jesus. Jesus talking with one of the religious elite of His day named Nicodemus tells Him “most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) Are you a citizen of heaven? Whose kingdom do you belong to; the worlds or heavens? Have you received your Rebirth certificate by placing your faith in Jesus? If you have then God has issued you a passport certifying your identity in Christ, your citizenship and you are under His protection; you also have all the privileges and benefits of being a citizen of the kingdom of the God most High under the care and control of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. You are now a citizen of a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Heb. 11:28). However along with those privileges and benefits comes a great responsibility.

We must understand that this world we are currently living in is not our home (1 Peter 2:11-12, Heb. 13:14). When you go to a foreign country you are required to have a visa. When you apply for a visa you are asked if it is for business or if you’re a tourist. All believers have a return ticket back to our kingdom of which we are citizens which no one knows the time or day of but God has not left us here to take in the sights and gorge ourselves on the things this world has to offer in the mean time. No now He has called us and sent us to be about our Master’s business. We are to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matt.28:19-20a). We don’t know when our visas expire but our time here is but a vapor (James 4:14) and then we will return home; so the question begs answering by us all, to whose kingdom are you a citizen and are you on a business trip or are you just a tourist?

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, – Phil. 3:20
